When I try to use youtube or soundcloud or anything of the like I get the following error:

ERROR: Unable to download webpage: <urlopen error [Errno -2] Name or service not known> (caused by URLError(gaierror(-2, 'Name or service not known'),))

Any idea how to fix this?

Youtube and soundcloud work as intended.

Be sure that you use the right links:

For Youtube only directplay links work

For soundcloud you usally get the playable link if you click on share and copy paste this link.

I still get this error even when trying to play youtube and soundcloud from the media browser on the web interface.
I tried using a free proxy and it seemed to at least play but super slowly.

Is there an extra port I need to open or something to get it to work without a proxy?

usally if outgoing traffic is allowed there are no Problems, but because you said with a proxy it is working it looks like your hoster maybe blocks youtube/soundcloud especially because you get an error with "Service not known".

The host I'm using is a VPS.

I just remote connected into a desktop environment and was able to use firefox to watch youtube videos.

Based on this I would assume that they aren't blocking connections to and from youtube and would imply some kind of connection error between the actual music bot and the facilities of the system itself.

Could there be any other reasons for the error?

only reason that can be, is that you forgott to remove the proxy in some case you get similar errors from that, the media-browser and also the yt-chat-commands works for me without any issues.

I tested it on 3 different systems.

What system do you use?

Windows or Linux? 64Bit or 32Bit

how much ressources do you have?

Ram and Cpu's (Ghz)

I am running Ubuntu 15.10 64 bit and have 2GB of RAM and Dual 2.4GHz CPU

okay that looks fine, it should definitely work.

you can come on our support-TS3, then i can take a closer look on it over teamviewer, maybe i can finde something there
